Okinawan photographer Mao Ishikawa embarked on a journey to Philadelphia at the age of 33 to document the life of her friend, Myron Carr, a former US marine she had met during his service in Okinawa in the 1970s. Her resulting photo book, “Life in Philly,” captures the raw essence of the predominantly African American neighborhood in downtown Philadelphia during the late 80s. This documentary revisits those days, invoking memories of Myron as Mao and his surviving family attempt to piece together the missing fragments of the past.
